Building from a successful Data Science Federation project, the Toyota Mobility Foundation provided a $90,000 grant to the City and Cal State LA through the Mayor’s Fund. This machine learning and computer vision task automatically counts the pedestrians and bicyclists moving through an intersection in near-real-time to help LADOT adjust traffic lights and routes. Students at CSULA’s Data Science Research Group, headed by Professor Mohammad Pourhomayoun, will conduct the research, in coordination with LADOT’s Marcel Porras and ITA’s Hunter Owens and Maryam Abbassi and will be showcased at the November LA Comotion event.
